6.1 Biogas Generation - Humanitarian Sanitation Hub

6.1 Biogas Generation

The assessment included the installation of biogas meters. The production was measured by monitoring the gas meter at zero bar gas pressure over a specific period. Biogas production was further validated using the displacement method to ensure accurate and reliable results. Additionally, the methane concentration of the biogas was measured using a biogas analyser.

The results are presented in a boxplot, where the interquartile range (IQR) is represented as a bar. As indicated in the boxplot, most of the biogas generation values ranged from 147 to 290 litres per cubicle per day. This highlights the typical levels of biogas production observed across the assessed biogas plants. The median methane (CH4) concentration was found to be 62%, indicating the average methane content in the biogas samples.

Biogas Generation Per Toilet and Day (UPM)

Due to the lack of accurate data on the number of daily toilet users, an estimation approach was adopted by considering the average number of users per toilet cubicle per day in the specific camp and the assessed biogas generation rate per cubicle per day. Thus, the biogas generation rate per capita per day was approximated.

As shown in the boxplot, the biogas generation rate per capita per day ranges from 0.01 to 0.02 m³ of biogas per person. It’s important to note that these estimates are based on the average number of visitors per toilet cubicle, providing a rough indication of the refugee camp’s potential biogas production and energy generation capacity.
