3.9 Applicability in Emergency Settings

Aerobic digestion can be a viable solution for stabilising and recovering from a humanitarian emergency, especially in densely populated urban areas or larger camps, as the example from Cox’s Bazar illustrates. This treatment is centralised and requires well-trained staff and constant electricity. It is more effective for treating larger volumes due to economies of scale and less fluctuating influent characteristics. The processes work well in almost every climate, but their treatment capacity is reduced in colder environments. If the system is well-operated, the treated water and biosolid quality can be suitable for reuse.
