Director, Sanitation Research Institute (SRI) at Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST)

Prof. Joy Nyawira Riungu is a distinguished sanitation engineer and institutional leader with over 15 years of experience directing multi-country research, designing resource-recovery systems, and building inclusive value chains in Sub-Saharan Africa. As founding Director of the Sanitation Research Institute at Meru University of Science & Technology (MUST), she has pioneered circular bioeconomy approaches — including Black Soldier Fly (BSF)-based bio-enterprises, faecal sludge-to-energy conversion, and composting — that transform waste streams into productive agricultural and economic assets.She has led multi-stakeholder, multi-country grant programmes funded by UKRI, the British Council and Water and Development Partnership Programme, etc. and collaborates with multiple International and National Institutions. Key achievements include contributing to Kenya’s National Sanitation Policy, a published book with CRC Press on biogas production from faecal matter, and publications in Nature Water and PLoS ONE. Country focus: Anglophone Africa. Active in POLKA (EU), EPIC-SD (EU) and IPIS (EU) consortia, and contributor to the British Council Learning and Design Lab collaboration between MUST and Aston University. Member of IWA, AfWASA, GSGS ESA, GWOPA etc.
